Water damaged phone - is it saveable after a week?

I backed up my phone before I went camping -- no cell service where I was. Phone fell out of bag and into river water for about 15 seconds or so. Got back to camp about 15-20 minutes later and phone got really hot to the touch, too hot to hold for more than a few seconds. Had no way of opening it up, nor did I have rice to stick it in (as everyone says to do). Put it in corn meal stuff over night; it wasn't working so I thought what the heck why not? I never tried to plug it in until day after but no activity from phone. Got back home 3 days later and opened up phone (had already dried). Watched some youtube videos to see about repair. Still in denial (took many pics and vids on phone before I could back it up).

I am just wondering if phone is even repairable if it got really hot that first day, as I am not sure what that was.

@holdenleah8, Leah, Jaclynn, Rice would have down nothing to stop the corrosion that maybe happening to the inside of phone right now. Stop charging or powering up your device until the liquid damage is addressed correctly, as you could be shorting out components inside the phone. You really should take care of the corrosion that is happening inside the phone from the water damage as that could be your problem. A tear down link for your device Link #1, disassembly guide for iPhone 6 will enable you to get inside the phone to remove the damage/corrosion caused by the liquid. Use the 2nd link as a guide/instruction on how to clean/repair the device from liquid damage. After this you will be able to power on the phone and see if further damage has to be addressed. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Can you see a lot of corrosion/ rust in screws etc. You could try cleaning it with isopropyl but I find pretty much anything that has sat longer than 24hrs is only of use for data recovery . I very much doubt it will be repairable to an everyday useable degree.

I done a couple of water damage ones today. An iPhone 5 in sink water, no detergent and happened only yesterday apparently but opened it up and it was completely ate up so customer maybe not completely truthful. It was a no go.

The other was more successful . An iPhone 5S in toilet water 16 hrs previously . Cleaned board in isopropyl and ultrasonic cleaner. Escaped with just a battery and bottom speaker being needed after the clean.

It's all in the timing (how soon you can get it stripped and cleaned) and the type of water it is.

Thanks for the response; I was able to open it up about 4 days later; would the isopropyl help if the phone is already dry?

Unfortunately, you may have waited to long and the water damage proved to be too extensive. If you were quick to put it in rice, the moisture would be absorbed out of the phone, and it might have been salvageable. However, since you had to wait a week, the water made its way through all of the phone's components and thus bye bye phone :( Your pictures however may still be in iCloud if you used iCloud photo storage. I'd suggest checking there for those!

I agree; it may have gone too long before I was able to open it up. I had put it in corn meal stuff over night, so idk if that helped. Do you know if there is a way to recover any pics/vids from the phone? I had backed it up before camping but did not have phone service to back it up where I was.

I would say the best bet would be to search for Data Recovery services online. There are companies where you can send your device to and they will pull data from it (pics, contacts, etc..). However, this is only possible if the hard drive did not get fried in the process of you dropping it in the water.

Put it in rice? Slap your face and bite your tongue.

The heat indicates that the battery shorted and is not charged. After mine spent 2 weeks in 8 feet of water, I charged it and it did fine. Putting it in anything would not have stopped the short, because it happened immediately. Salt water would be worse, but fresh water generally does not corrode much. Don't lose hope. At this point, just try charging it and hopefully whatever shorted did not burn out a key component. I am a testimony to the fact they can work after prolonged immersion.

I found a an iPhone in Cornwall on the beach. I think it’s a iPhone 7 or 8 and I’ve left for more than 48 hours to dry. I tried turning it on and charging it but it doesn’t work. Does anyone know what I could do to get it to work again. I’m not sure that it will work again though because I have no idea how long it has been in the sea for. It could have been in for weeks or maybe just a few days but ether way it doesn’t work and it’s been in salt water which I’m guessing doesn’t help at all.
