Why doesn't my trackpad work?

So the track pad just stopped working one day. I assume it is a hardware issue, but can't be sure.

Here is the run down of what I have tried;

  • I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers like 20 times.
  • I fresh installed Window 7, 8.1, and 10
  • I opened up the laptop and attempted to see if there might be a loose connection
  • I checked several forums for advice
  • I tried using the fn+f9 trick (this computer also has touch buttons above the keyboard for disabling and enabling screen modes, power modes, and trackpad! yet when I try to enable the trackpad the button light flashes and then lights back up)

Help me! Do I need to consider replacing the whole thing? I am only asking because I want to sell this thing and would prefer this work for the next person... although I have used a bluetooth mouse with the computer for the last few years...

Hi,

Have you checked if it appears in Device Manager? If so, what is its' status?. If it doesn't appear there I'm just wondering if there may be a setting in BIOS which can enable/disable it

Before replacing the track pad you may want to check the connection on the motherboard for bad solder joints. If the joints have cracked or popped this will make the pad stop working and when checking the connection of the cable it will appear fine . Use a magnifying glass to closely inspect the solder points on the motherboard end of the cable. If all seems well then a new track pad is probably in order. Just hate to see you change it and not have it work.

I am not an Asus guy! But on most Macs trackpads issues are generally caused by swollen batteries. Give it a shot.

Thanks for the input, but don't think this is relevant to my issue.

especially after spending the night searching for, downloading and installing drivers for my other laptop. I was surprised to find that the windows 7 professional (my home machine is windows 7 home) didn't provide me with network and other drivers. I wasn't seeing any wireless connections. Initially I was using an internet stick and the problem wasn't visible. I take that machine out with me. I had it home last night and that's when I found the problem. And trying to get that touchpad driver had me wondering about this one. I don't use my laptop keyboard on my home machine, preferring a natural contour full keyboard I plug in, so I never deal with the touchpad, otherwise I'd be hitting it all the time, which I used to do. I am a mouse guy. If I had to to take this machine out, the touchpad thing would drive me nuts. Any thoughts?

it sounds like you checked everything right. i would do 2 more things.

1. make a hirens boot disk or windows disk or usb and boot to mini xp or boot from windows disk and see if the track pad works in there. if it does then you know that you have a software issue.

2, if not then i would order a replacement track pad and replace it cause that should point you towards a hardware issues.

p.s. swollen batteries on macs usually cause the glass track pad to crack or be raised cause the battery is right under neath the track pad on most models and is completely unrelated to asus or other manf. designs. dont go out and by a battery cause it will not fix your issue

also some time the fn +f9 key is not the proper key combo. you should see a key that has a track pad on in or a track pad with a cross through it that. try that key with the fn combo, also sometime the manf, will have a small button or a light on track pad the will function as the on off switch. hope this helps

also some track pads have multiply connections make sure you arent missing one just in case. usually most laptops have 2 or 3 , a cable that runs to a cable that run to a cable that runs to a track pad lol

Thanks for the ideas I will have to give it a shot.

Would booting into a live CD Ubuntu work for this test? I ask because I have that ready to go already.
