Help with iPhone 5 battery issue

Ok, so hopefully someone with more knowledge than myself can help.

I bought a used iPhone 5 off of eBay a few weeks ago. Everything worked, but the battery life left a lot to be desired. Even with light use, it would be dead by lunch. It would lose a percentage point every minute or so of use. Anyway, I've tinkered with electronics before so I decided to swap out the battery.

The swap went well, and my phone was soon back up and running. Except the battery seemed to drain just as quickly as before. But here's the weird thing. At about 12%, the battery drain slows. And then at 1%, the phone will last for hours. It'll go through the first 90% in about two hours, then last the rest of the day at 1%.

I bought a cheap battery off eBay, so I tonight maybe that my be the culprit. I've also considered it may be a software issue, as I set up this iPhone from a backup. Maybe a restore and set up as a new device will fix it.

Other than those ideas, I'm stumped. Anybody else experience this? And ideas? Is there a physical battery sensor/indicator that can be replaced? Thanks guys.

As of now, the only thing I have not tried is buying a higher quality battery. In the next week or so I am going to get one from iFixit and then hopefully my battery woes will be behind me.

It really does sound like just a faulty battery. It potentially could be more hardware problems. But it does just sound like the battery. I could also see it being a software thing. Which iOS did you update it to? Which carrier are you on? You can most likely exchange your battery, for a different one. It might be more advantageous to get a quality battery, though

I'm running 9.2.1, on Ting (it is a Sprint iPhone originally). I just did a full reset, and set it up as a new iPhone. If that does not work, I will probably purchase a better quality battery as my last effort.

Ifixit only sells good quality parts. Almost everywhere else is gonna be a gamble

Yeah, I'm going to get one from there.

Most likely it's either the battery or the u2 chip on the phone. You want a brand new genuine quality battery first. Difficult thing is finding them because even though they say "OEM," they're not.. Cheap batteries may have cheap battery cells and cheap components that may damage the phone, just like cheap chargers.

I'd try doing a full clean reset on the phone first, charge it up to 100 (and leave plugged in for like an hour or so), unplug it, and play a youtube video or something and see how long it lasts. You should be able to get a few hours of video playback with full brightness.

You could also try making an appointment to the apple store and tell them to check the battery health. They'll be able to tell you if it's good or not. Don't tell them you replaced it yourself though ;)

Hello ianharkins1 , I would suggest to buy a new battery from apple or a repeatable source. If it was the chip I would suspect you would have larger problems than a battery issue. I know from experience with my iPhone 5 how repairing my shattered screen with a new one drained my battery much quicker, whereas the person who has it now the battery last all day. My point, the batteries you received may be "refurbished" which usually mean their best days are behind them. Upgrade to a new fresh battery and you should be in good shape.

Please let us know how everything goes!
