Can you fix the S2 IS Black Screen/Stuck Iris problem?

It seems the Canon S2 IS and some other canon products have a fault where the screen and viewfinder go black even though the menus etc.. are still visible. This could be a CCD problem but is apparently often a problem with the iris getting stuck closed. Many people report being able to fix this by shooting a long exposure and opening the battery case during the exposure to jog the iris open again but many people also find this doesn't work.

I thought it would be a great project for the iFixit team to show how to open up the camera to get to the iris and to clean it.

Any ideas, thoughts?
