Water damage - screen repair or something more serious?

Our son unfortunately spilt some juice onto the closed Macbook Pro. Since then, the screen looks like this…

I can run a hardware test that comes back ok, but the screen won't move past this level of progress. I've also tried hooking it up to an external monitor (using HDMI) as I thought the screen might be frozen but internally working - no cigar.

Any idea on where to start fixing this, or does it appear bricked and beyond repair?
