Second Drive Kit = Slow Drive

Hello, I installed a second internal drive on my Mac Mini using the iFixit kit (late 2012 model), and all is well... or so I thought. I just ran the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and discovered that I am getting a maximum Read speed of 5MB/s. This is pitifully slow.

The drive in question came out of a 2014 iMac, and it performed flawlessly inside that machine, so I have no reason to believe the drive is bad.

Could it be the SATA cable I got in the iFixit kit? Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks.

Isn't an iMac drive a 3.5" drive?

さんによる

Oh, maybe? I have six machines and I swap drives a lot so I could be confused by the drives origin. However, it functions normally, Disk Utikity finds nothing wrong with it, but BM speed test shows painfully slow results. I suspect that Black Magic may just be wrong.

Can you give us the make and model of the drive in question as well as what is the OS release you are using.

さんによる

Not sure how to find the make and model but System Information has the Media Name as "APPLE HDD HTS541010A9E662 Media". I know that Apple doesn't make drives so I'm guessing that's not it. If there's a way to get that please let me know.

OS is El Capitan 10.11.1.

OK, your drive is an Apple OEM HGST Travelstar which is SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive

It is able to run at SATA III but is unable to run at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) so it drops down to SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) - Compatibility Mode here.

This series of Mac Mini has an issue with the upper bay (where the optical drive would have been located) in some models.

Lets make sure the systems firmware is up to date first. Review this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers make sure its at least at this level (it maybe newer).

If its up to date you'll need to find a Fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive to put in instead if you want the performance. Because of the SATA port issue within this system you can't use a auto sense drive as well.

OK, so firmware is up to date so I guess it's down to swapping out the drive with one that is compatible. Sadly this mod was a real PITA (pain in the ass- is that an acceptable acronym?) so I am not looking forward to doing it again. How do I know if a drive has 'auto sense' or not? Is that something manufacturers note?

By the way, THANK YOU for making this clear for me. You rock, Rock.

You need to review the spec sheets. While its not always Black & White there are clues. As an example checkout this spec sheet: Seagate Laptop SSHD note Interface line SATA 6.0/3.0/1.5Gb/s NCQ this is an auto sense drive.

Gotcha. So essentially I am looking for a drive that is strictly SATA 3.0 Gb/s then. That makes sense, thanks.

It would have been VERY helpful to know this before I did the mod! ;)
