Fan connector broken off motherboard, is fan needed for function?

The computer in question is a 2012 13" macbook pro with the i5. I understand the fan plays a role in cooling the hardware, but will the laptop itself check for it? In theory I can wire said fan up to any old power source and just let it run full tilt and the computer wont throw any errors at me in regards to a missing component?

A lot of computes will check for a working fan and throw an error if it doesn't find one, or it's not spinning. Unfortunately the Macbook pro that you have was not designed to work without a running fan and will most likely overheat fairly quickly and shut down again. I would not recommend running the hardware without a fan as the Processor is not designed to be passively cooled like the new Macbook.

I haven't worked with Macs extensively in a few years; but, I'm confident in saying that It will function normally without the fan. The system will check all components at boot-up and generally flag you of a component that is not operational. In terms of shutting down, it would happen automatically if the internal temperature exceeds its designated threshold.

Tell you what, since it's getting cold try disconnecting your auto fan and tell us afterward if you engine overheats and burns the engine up, then answer this question. Or don't you want to risk it on your machine?
