Apple MacBook Pro DVD-RW Burner Super Drive GSA-S10N

I purchased a new optical drive to replace the original in my MacBook Pro that continually failed burning. The original was still recognized in my system profile. I have a 2.2Ghz INtel Core 2 Duo - 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM operating Max OS X 10.6.4.

I successfully installed the new drive - I hear is buzzing around at start up and inserted a CD containing PDF files.

The CD never opened and I cannot eject the CD. The puzzle is that all software is up to date as well as the firmware. The laptop does not recognize the new optical drive at all.

Something I missed? What do I do next?

The new drive:

Dual Layer Superdrive

Model: Apple MacBook Pro DVD-RW Super Drive GSA-S10N

EEE Code: 0JG, U16, VVH, W8Z, WV0, XQ2, XRQ

one other thing. When doing a variety of utilities measures, checking the drive issue, I also found this. Can anyone tell me what it means?

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

This Thread should shed some light on your permissions issue, you are not alone. The Superdrive issue can be one of three things, actually 4: 1) the drive was not properly connected

2) The SATA flex cable that connects the Drive to the logic board is bad

3) The superdrive is bad

4) Logic board connection is faulty.

I would try a SMC and PRAM reset, that failing an erase and install of OS as well, just to eliminate a software issue of some sort.

..ok, so I took the machine apart this morning and checked the connection to the board and rebooted the machine. Checked the system profile and found the the drive is now recognized and the next step is to try it out. Thanks for the recommendations. The permissions issue has to wait for now...

If you feel comfy opening the mac and replacing the drive yourself, it's just a matter of price. Apple doesn't make SSDs, so they just buy them to a 3rd party like everyone else. Beyond that, look at the benchmarks and the price to figure out which one you want. Just a note of warning: make sure that your SSD will work with the mac (by reading user forums etc...) it happened in the past that some SSD were not compatible with Macs
