Can I polish or remove a scratch from the Apple logo?

I know this has probably been asked dozens of times before, and the answer is probably no, but somehow my phone's Apple logo got a giant scratch while inside a case. This thing is only a week old, so it's a really annoying for me especially because I wanted to keep this phone for two years.

(This is a 6S, but the body is the same as the 6 which has more activity.)

I tried Mothers metal polish on it which I know is good for the Apple Watch, but I had no luck, seems to have done nothing. I don't feel comfortable taking the phone apart and I really don't want to exchange it for a potentially worse defect model over cosmetic damage. I thought it was stainless steel, so I'm surprised the polish didn't do anything. Is there another product I can try that I might have better luck with?

In the same vein, what about the aluminum logo on the 5S?

Is there a specific one you'd recommend? Apparently there are many Autosol products - one for stainless steel, anodized aluminum, and then there's the standard metal polish. Should I just get that one?

the 75ml metal polish

The problem you face here is how deep is the scratch. A very fine scratch might be something a polish could hide.

But the issue you face here is the polish needs to remove a fine layer of the surface so if the surface is anodized aluminum you will in effect be taking off the thin layer of the anodized finish. Think of it this way you're sanding off the paint!

If the surface is solid like the Apple silver logo then you can go heavier as there is nothing to show through (BTW: this is a liquid metal stamping). But, the more you polish you could end up with a imperfection in the way the metal reflects as it will have a slight bending in the light from the reflection.

If this was the glass surface you would remove the coatings which would be very noticeable!

Bottom line here: if you have this in a case then it's hidden. I would leave it alone.

once you polish it with a strong cutting agent, you can reseal it with a light layer of wax.

@Sunny - The liquid metal logo won't tarnish it's like stainless steel. The anodized aluminum will have the base metal showing which in my mind would look worse than the scratch and will oxidize over time

If I'm careful with the polish with, say, a Q-tip, that wouldn't effect the aluminum part at all though, would it?

Different grades of polish have different abrasive effects. Here's a good writeup on anodized aluminum. The thickness of the coating is only a few nanometers so it doesn't take much to rub it off with a strong abrasive or a long polishing with a lighter abrasive. The trick here is to be very light but that may not be enough to get rid of the scratch so the more you rub the thinner the coating gets so the base metal shows. The stamped logo is solid metal without any coatings.

So can we all agree that the apple logo on the back is even a metal? I have my doubts and would hate to find out the hard way that it's plastic lol.
