Hi there,
I recently connected my laptop to TV via Mini Display Port. As soon as there was contact between the cable and the port there was a small spark and the Laptop died. How can I bring her back to life!? I took it into the Mac Shop but could not get a solid answer. A suggestion was made about a Magsafe Powerboard replacement.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The video signal is processed on the main logic board so I don't understand why they thought the DC-In Board would be the issue. In this series the DC-In Board is quite benign. So I don't see that as the issue.
Can you get the built-in battery checker to fire up? Do you see at least a few LEDs lit? If you do you know the system has power and if you press the power button the system should some response, do you? If the battery is now dead when you tried to restart your system after it sparked did you get a response then?
At this point I think you'll need to open the system up to inspect the logic board for damage. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009 Logic Board Replacement. If you see anything different comparing the IFIXIT images take a good sharp picture and post it in your question so we can see. If you're lucky it might be an easy fix, if not it may require a new logic board.

I should make a note to the service at the Mac Shop. They did say I could send it away for repair but given the nature of the issue it would most likely be rather pricey, so i thought i'd try a DIY approach first as the machine is ageing. If it proves to be too expensive too repair or too complex for a DIY job I think I'll remove hard drive and convert to external.

First you should contact the maker of the mini DP to HDMI adapter as it clearly failed. See if they will cover some of the costs.
