iMac display has burnt smell and will not light up

This iMac A1418 EMC 2544 Late 2012 21.5" has 4 LEDs on the logic board that light up when the display is plugged in, everything powers up except for screen which emits a burnt smell. How confident can I be if I replace the display assembly that it will be fine? Or should I be concerned that there may be a deeper cause lurking to fry my replacement display unit? Thanks in advance for responding! Charles

Sometimes it's hard to determine exactly where a smell is if you have two or three fans blowing around. First plug in an external monitor to help isolate the problem and let us know your results.

I removed the display completely and the smell is definitely coming from the backside of the display. I smelled around and that's the only area that has the odor. I don't currently have a proper adapter to plug the iMac to an external display unfortunately. However do displays typically burn out naturally or is it usually caused by another factor, eg a short or power surge?

I've seen the power suppliers total smoke the inside of an iMac. Also a whole lots of bad GPUs but never a burned smelling display. Try running the AHT from the original installation disk and see if you get a error code.

AHT error: 4SNS/1/C0000008: TL0p - - 124. Read elsewhere: "The error indicates the LCD temp sensor is either reporting out of range data, is disconnected, or has failed. It is probably a damaged or disconnected sensor cable. A disconnected or missing sensor would simply force the fan(s) to run".

The LCD display is completely unplugged so I am hoping the LCD display temperature sensor is part of either the power or data cables for the display. I couldn't find a reference for a separate LCD temperature sensor connector for the iMac A1418 EMC 2544. I hope this is the case. Otherwise I may be wasting my money replacing the display. What do you think?

When I first booted up to the external monitor the Apple logo was present with a progress bar that appeared to stop 1/3 of the way and stop. I shut it down 30 mins later then ran the AHT. The 3rd boot up brought me to the log in screen where I was able to run disk health & permissions checks. Disk health OK and many permissions corrected.

Does anyone care to respond on the frequency of the LCD display failure or burnout on the iMacs 2012 and later? Judging by the lack of information on this topic on the web it appears infrequent, but those parts are available, so there is a need.

I've never seen one that burned out like yours.
