Screen turns off after 1 or 2 minutes after booting

I have an iMac A1207 20" 2.16 Ghz.

It starts to blank the screen 1 or 2 minutes after booting but the computer remains working. I can even make it to sleep and the awake it from sleep so the screen turns on, but after some seconds it turns off again.

When I left the iMac disconnected from power outlet, the screen remains turned on for more time (like a whole day). But then when the screen starts to turn off, it keeps turning off frequently.

So I have to leave the iMac disconnected from the power outlet.

Does anybody know what is the problem?

I am almost sure it is a hardware problem but which part I should replace? Backlight Inverter board? Heat sink sensor? Which heat sink sensor? LCD? Graphics Card?

Thanks in advance!

Well to find out if it is the back light you said that you can tell it is on when the screen turns off, well can you see anything displayed on your black screen with a flashlight? If the back light has a problem or goes out your screen will still display but you cant see anything unless you shine a light on your screen to see it, so if you see anything and the screen is just dark then it is the back light

To me though this sounds like a power supply that the LCD power is not functioning properly since you say when u drain the electricity it will stay on longer after that, i have heard people setting their PC's to never sleep the screen or the PC so they can avoid this issue, and it is a very well known issue iMac's have and yet apple does nothing about any of it, we have had to replace video cards to fix this problem, power supplies, and even logic boards, sometimes its the LCD connection and not the whole LCD, so just keep doing your process of elimination and see what works for you

Hello, irish420311, when the screen goes out, I shined a light on it and I could not see anything; the screen is completely dark.

Do you think that it should be the power supply?

This could be the power supply, but if the PC is still on and this happens it could be video card instead, that is where i would start
