Do the gigabit ports on the AE need to "activated"?

i use my Airport Extreme to connect both wirelessly and wired - wired, via ''cat6 cable (75')''bold text to my iMac.

I can select 1000baseT in Network set-up for the iMac, but if so, I can't connect to the AE - gigabit is not an option on the AE and I can only connect if I set the iMac back down to "100baseTX".

BTW - forgot to mention that I bought it used, but ran the serial number and according to the specs on the Apple support pages, it's a gigabit version.

Serial 6F70742FVZC

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the Serial - You DO NOT have a GIGABIT Airport Extreme, you have AIRPORT EXTR BASE STN/802.11N-US/CA

No, ports are what they are, are you sure you have the gigabit version? I know I have the AE with the 100base ports - which is why i only use it for wireless.

Another thought is that if you were just using cat 5 cable, you need at least cat 5e to support gigabit.

Actually CAT5, CAT5e and CAT6 will all work...the difference between the three has nothing to do with throughput but with maximum distance. CAT5 is spec'd to 100 meters,CAT5e to 350 meters and CAT6 to 550. There are also slight differences in thickness...

Actually, you need CAT6 for gigabit ethernet. CAT5 and CAT5e are for 10Base100 Ethernet.

Also, make sure that whatever is at the other end is also gigabit. If you have a device at the other end that is only 10/100 it will show up as being 10/100 instead of gigabit.
