replacement parts or replace laptop?

I dropped my macbook a couple of days ago, and bent the casing where the usb plug in goes for the printer cable. is it possible to either fix it or replace it?

2) the last 2 times that I've tried to plug in my ipod to re-charge and/or to load in new podcasts, a message comes up on the computer that it is drawing too much power and the ports are being closed down, or whatever the expression is--de-activated in some way. Is this a long term problem?

3) I have seen on ebay that one can replace the keyboard on this mac, and think that this is a good direction if this macbook is salvagable. What do you think from all of these problems?

I would rather spend $300 or $400 than $1800 for a new one if these problems above can be fixed. Esp. since we recently replaced the DVD player. Can they be fixed or is my computer now readily to be harvested for other computers?

Lets look at 2 and 3 first. What you probably seeing is the item you are attaching draws too much current for the outlet. Simple solution would be to purchase a externally powered USB port that would provide sufficient power.

If you have problems with your keyboard that's a reasonable swap.

On the first item--it can be repaired by replacing the damaged case. I would only do that if the damage prevents the use of the connection or I absolutely hate the look. Be advised to do this repair you have to remove EVERYTHING from the case and move it to the replacement unit.

Hope this is of some help to you. Ralph

+ replacing the left I/O board should also solve your USB problem.

yes, because if his USB ports are in a fritz, the USB hub wouldn't work either.

The OP stated he was getting the message that he was drawing too much power. That would indicate the port was working but the device drew too much current for the port.

さんによる

Yeah but these messages were Post Accident, an iPod shouldn't be drawing "too much power".

What you need to replace is the "I/O Board". The casing and keyboard can be replaced, the former being a "not so fun" repair.

This is the keyboard

This is the casing you seek.

If you are able to physically connect to the ports and still receive these error messages, then you might have damaged the I/O Board as well, look into that. But, it's quite fixable. My EX- girlfriend basically tap danced on my Macbook, tore it to shreds!!! I brought it back to life with LOTS of patience and LITTLE money compared to an Apple repair or replacement. We are here for you every step of the way. Have fun< it's definitely repairable.

I believe the OP said the case was damaged. Ralph

Yeah, I wasn't done actually< LOL wanted to add a picture and links but you beat me to it.

+ Sometimes you have to know the part number to find it on iFixit parts. Something they really need to work on. But the part # is 922-7911 and here it is: MacBook Pro 15" (Model A1211) Left I/O Board

さんによる

Thanx Mayer, I couldn't find it. :o)

さんによる

I see, it was in the "Magsafe Boards" link, I was looking for "I/O Boards".

thank you. This gives me some initial help to figure the rest out. The keyboard only needs to be replaced, not because of functionality, but because the letters are no longer readable from too much use. The USB connectors on the right and left work with the printer cable, just not with my ipod.

Prior to replacing your replacement keyboard for sony vaio vgn-fe880e/h, make sure to remove the keyboard and disconnect the ac adapter from your laptop.

The first step to replacing your laptop keyboard is to remove the screws from the back of your vaio vgn-fe880e/h. Sometimes your laptop will have a picture of a keyboard next to the screws that need to be removed. Otherwise, see your laptop manual for details.

Above the laptop keyboard for sony vaio vgn-fe880e/h, you have a cover panel. If required, remove this part to easily access your keyboard. If you have screws above your keyboard, remove those screws.

Now that you have removed all the screws, you are ready to remove and then replace your new laptop keyboard.

To remove the vaio vgn-fe880e/h Keyboard, take a thin object and pry the keyboard out between the keyboard and motherboard. Be careful when removing the keyboard.

Now that your keyboard is loose, simply disconnect your keyboard. In order to disconnect the keyboard, pay attention to the keyboard connector and connector cable. Unlock the connector cable device and remove your laptop keyboard. Your sony vaio vgn-fe880e/h connector cable should be easy to remove by simply sliding it out.

Now that your keyboard has been removed, get ready to install your new laptop keyboard. Look at the back of the keyboard. If you see any screw holes, you will have a good idea of where to place the screws back in at the bottom of the laptop.

Connect your laptop keyboard for sony vaio vgn-fe880e/h to the motherboard keyboard connection slot. Secure the keyboard cable. Now turn your keyboard in place, and align the grooves on the bottom of your keyboard with your palmrest or plastic bezel. Secure your laptop keyboard in place, make sure it fits properly and is snug. Now simply place the screws back in place.
