The laptop is separating when I open it
The laptop is separating when I open and close it. How do I fix it?

barb pelland, that will depend on where it is separating. You do want to add some images to your question so we can see what you see. Separation like that is usually caused by bad/broken hinges or broken hinge mounts. Check this video for a bit more info.

Have the same problem. On back corner where hinge opens screen, the top of the laptop is separating from the lower part. Has to do with the torque when opening the cover/screen.
You need to disassemble the laptop and use some silicone grease to lube the hinges. If the screws, which hold the hinges in place, have torn the anchors out of the lower half of the plastic laptop case then you need to use some epoxy or jbweld to glue the anchors back in place. Let me know if you need further instruction or pictures. I’m in a rush right now otherwise I would have elaborated.
