iPod screen isn't functioning. How to access locked iPod to back up?

I have an iPod 5. The iPod was hit out of my hands and landed screen first on the ground. I picked it up and the screen looked internally cracked, it was turning black. Then the screen turned completely black. It wasn't responding, so I restarted by holding the lock and home button. The iPod hasn't turned on since. I'm trying to backup the information, but I keep getting a message that it cannot back up because my iPod is locked with a passcode. Problem, I can't enter my passcode on my iPod because I can't get the screen to work. Is there a way to bypass/enter the passcode via laptop?
