How do I clear room for memory?

I am unable to use my GPS Google Maps because an update for Google Play is required. I cant update Google play due to not enough space for memory. I dont play games or listen to music and hardly take any pics. My phone has a 8GB memory card also. Why wont Google maps work anymore? Help!! Please!
