Why isn't my sound coming

My Mac book air, mid 2013 model sound doesn't work. the mute, decrease and the increase buttons all appear on the screen when you touch them, but the volume just doesn't come. The volume indicator is greyed out. There is no red light. I have tried everything. When you insert an earpiece into the headphone jack, you hear a buzzing sound. Is it a hardware problem?
