Can I connect my DVR to my iMac (and throw out my 24 year old TV)?

Can I connect the DVR to the iMac? When I read about adapter cables, it sounds like the mini displayport is used for output, especially for other Mac models. Will an adapter allow it to accept input? Thanks.

By DVR do you mean cable (or satellite) box?

The DVR is a cable box. It has multiple outputs like IEEE 1394, USB, Ethernet, HDMI, S Video, etc. I use the video out yellow-red-white to an RF converter to the old TV. I would like to use the HDMI port on the DVR and go to the mini displayport on the iMac. From what I've read, I'm not convinced that it'll work.

the 27" iMac has a mini displayport connector that can be used either as input or output. Currently all other Macs with a mini displayport connector are output-only.

Yes, theoretically you could connect a DVR's output to your 27" iMac with the appropriate cable & adapter, although I'm not aware of any that exist yet for this purpose. Unfortunately Apple hasn't yet published any details about driving this input from sources other than another Mac with mini displayport output, so I'm not sure what display resolutions and formats would be supported, but hopefully solutions will soon be available.

does your DVR have a Firewire output? if so, that's another possible way to input HDTV from a cable box, I know it works for the Motorola HDTV cable box I have, I can record HDTV programs on my MacBook Pro.

You say there's USB, if you can't do with USB what bac is alluding to with firewire, then there are USB/Firewire adapters.
