iPad 2 Won't Sleep/Wake through lock button but powers on/off

I fix iPads on a regular basis, and like to think I know what i'm doing. I replaced the digitizer and lock button flex on this particular iPad about 4 weeks ago. All was working ok, but the customer has brought it back as it will not sleep/wake using the lock button. It powers on/off with the button ok. It does not have a smart cover on so there is not option in the settings to deactivate the sleep/wake function.Done the usual reset/restore etc but still the fault remains :-( Any ideas please? Thanks in advance. Rik

Sounds to me like the digitizer will need to be replaced again. I get a lot of second hand digitizers and I run into this problem often. I don't know what the exact cause of the problem is but a new digitizer usually fixes the problem. Make sure you aren't creasing the flex cable between the frame and glass.

This is textbook damaged flex cable. Its a pain in the butt to redo, but something went wrong. Its possible that one of the ICs on the flex cable is bad but its more likely there is a small tear somewhere on it. Its also possible that the contact on the flex for the power button wiggled a bit loose or possibly the power button isn't lined up perfect.

My plan of action would be:

Tear down the iPad like you were going to replace the flex.

Examine the flex cable for obvious tears, twists or anything that just doesn't look right.

Examine the area near the volume rocker where the flex goes into the power switch. I've found micro tears here too many time.

Remove the flex slowly, looking for any place where its torn or twisted.

Remove the power button taking time to examine everything. Something isn't right in this area.

Replace the flex cable. TAKE YOUR TIME around the power and volume switches. This is not a job to rush. Its a $3 part that can cost you more time than money.

Make sure the screen on/off IC is stuck down firmly.

I like to put a strip of tape over the piece of flex that touches the digitizer.

If you do all of that and still have the same issue, its going to be a pain to diagnose. The digitizer on iPad 2s doesn't have any ICs like the Mini does, so I don't know that a bad digitizer could cause this. The flex cable has been the problem every time I have had the no sleep problem on a 2. Its also the cheapest and easiest to replace. Just take your time and examine every millimeter of it. Use plastic tools to avoid tears. Did I mention to take your time?

Had the same problem... As soon as I turned the" iPad Cover Lock/Unlock" option off, the power button went back to working normal, so I think it has something to do with either a glitch for that software setting after a screen is replaced or something with the mag sensor being damaged before/during the screen replacement.
