Why does the display only works with slight pressure?

When the macbook pro boots, display has a whitish color, with 1-2 lines (vertical and horizontal) crossing the screen. The mouse pointer will not move despite im touching/working on the trackpad. Strange thing is that if i press on the display, on the lower right side (not the plastic bevel but the display itself) it seems as if it makes contact of some sort and the display changes color back to normal and all seems operational (mouse is moving). If i stop pressing the panel at that area, everything freezes again, color changes back to whitish and lines appear again.

Might this be some sort of bad connection with cables?

Yes, that sounds like the display data cable is damaged. Here is the needed IFIXIT guide to get to it: MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Models A1226 and A1260 Display Data Cable Replacement. And here's the needed part: MacBook Pro 15" (Models A1226/A1260) Display Data Cable.

You may want to think hard here if it is worth fixing. First its a lot of work and while $50 dollars is not much this may push your skill set. Before you start I would recommend making a backup of your drive just in case.

What about the lines that appear? Are they vanished after the cable replacement?

Oh and one more thing i didnt mention. After pressure there is one line that will remain! Might that be due to the cable or something else?

The one line may stay even if you replace the board and the cable, live with it.

Most likely the hinge area of the display mid frame is cracked which cut the cable. As the frame is cracked opening and closing the lid has stressed the LCD breaking it as well. So you will likely need replace both. As I stated this is getting costly do you want to throw that much money into such an old system? There is a point its time to weep a tear for a trusted friend and put him down for a newer system.

Because the screen is dead, but wishful thinking that it is a $5 cable will always change the outcome. LCD control board is in that section. It is never the cable. This is BS made up by wishful thinking on the internet that one has a $5 problem and not a $100 one.

Louis now you really kinda changed things with your view. So, how can i be certain on what of the two (cable or led driver board) is responsible for the problem?

さんによる

In repair you really can't be certain.

It's not just his view, ask Dan for confirmation. We ( Dan, OT and I) answer a lot of questions and often answer with the first thing that comes to mind. I know I'm very guilty of that because I answer so many questions. Louis has just recently joined us but provides a fresh view sometimes (even with his New York attitude) and bears consideration. Besides it's cheaper that an LED replacement ;-))

@genik, I've seen bad cables from people over flexing the hinge, I've seen broken mid frames which cut the cable and I've seen LCD's damaged as well. My own trusted A1226 (Santa Rosa) just died the other week. So I know how you get attached to a system that has served you well. It was still running OS-9! Now I have to build a new system to replace it so I can still use some older software I still use. Louis point on having a bad LCD is quite plausible (as I had pointed out when you added one black line remained when applying pressure). Which is why I recommend you think long and hard before spending the money fixing this system.

When we (OT, Mayer or myself) answer questions we are viewing things by what information has been supplied. So we often have to leverage our personal experience to fill things in. In addition, we have to equate what ones skills are based on how the question was asked. Sometimes we guess wrong but more often than not we hit it on the nail for both! But, you have the ability to rebut here! Speak up! If we missed something or you forgot to tell us something. I promise you we don't begrudge people correcting us as long as they do it with some points of fact as reference. Hey, thats how we learn too here! ;-}

El Capitan (OS-X 10.11.x) is the limit. But, you will want to max out the RAM to 6 GB.

さんによる

Dont know if its worth fixing this old beloved MBP. I would certainly place in a new SSD and max the Ram to 6GB as u say, but im not sure if it will be able to work with Adobe CC that im planning to use.
