Fan replacement spinning question

I just replaced my left and right fans on my Macbook Pro 15" A1211. when I connected the right fan cable, it did not seem like it could connect well, and kept coming off. I finally got it to stay, but now I suspect that it may not be connected cause I don't hear the fan going. Is there a way I can check to see if the fan is spinning? Can I open the computer back up and connect the power to see it actually spin? Is that safe? Is there another way to check?

Thanks

Jeff Brown

Hi Oldturkey03, thanks for the advice, I installed Istat and it shows that both fans that I just installed are at 0rpms. So for some reason the new fans are not spinning. First question is should the fans be spinning all the time? or just when the board gets hot? 2nd questions is, if I open the computer up to troubleshoot, can I power up the computer while it is open, to see if and when the fans start to spin?

Yes you can power it up. In order to turn on the laptop you’ll have to short the 5th pin from the left side of the keyboard connector to the ground (a metal stud on the motherboard). That should power up your computer to check the fans. It will also help if you can give us the 820-XXXX number of your logic board. Or at least the last 4 digits of your computers serial number. that will help us to determine exactly what hardware you have and if your logic board my have power-on pads.

Hi Oldturkey03, can you explain more clearly how to short the 5th pin form the left side of the keyboard connector to the ground. Do you mean to take the keyboard connector that is removed, the touch the 5th pin from the left side to the ground (which is a metal stud on the motherboard) where specifically is the metal stud?

Thanks a lot!!
