I have an acer 4730 laptop with a 120 gb hard drive. My issue is it says the C drive is full and had a partition in it and i removed the d drive partiton and now it says that the harddrive is only 50.8 GB.
How do i remove this and make the hard drive the full 120 GB?

The easiest way for you is to recreate the 2nd partition again , make it d-drive and move data to the d-drive. that way you free up room on the C and keep data separate from prorams (on C)
all other options (done properly) would involve backing up all your data, creating (if you vane not done so) new instalation disks, then chnging the disk partitioning (effectively wiping all your data) and then installing the OS on the 1 120GB drive, reinstall all your programs and restoring your data.
I am not in favour (personal preference) to use the in-sity repartitioning programs

I'm assuming you are running Windows Vista Home Premium, and these instructions will be for that operating system.
in the Start menu, right-click on 'Computer' and click 'manage'.
under 'Storage' in the sidebar, click on 'Disk Management.' You will see on the bottom most likely Disk 0, it will appear to be in two segments, a Healthy (C:) volume and one that says 'Unallocated'. Right-click on the 'C' partition and click 'Extend Volume.'
the Extend Volume Wizard will launch, and walk you through the process. You should be able to click 'next' throughout the wizard, but read it to make sure. That should give you close to 120 gigs. (after formatting)

The problem with this is that this is impossible to do while using the partition in question, I.E. the C drive where the OS is. That is why a boot CD and a program like Gparted are required
I've done it before, actually, else I would agree with you.

If you have Windows XP Pro, Rt Click on My Computer, Manage, Disk Management. You can view your current configuration. Possibly make changes.

You might also download SystemRescueCD - http://www.sysresccd.org/Download - Lynux boot disk. Run a program called GParted. This will allow you to totally control your partitions without upsetting your OS boot. A great tool we all can use.

im using vista home premium and i tried the method on the help on the computer and it doesnt give em the full 120 gb of my hard drive. so if some one can explain in laymans terms to me exactly how to reformat the drive to being a single 120 gb drive without a partition id like that .

ok, this might come as a shock but all storage media is like this, you are NOT ever going to get a full 120gb, it could be anywhere from 95 and 120gb, depending on your drive. my iMac supposedly comes with a 320gb but it's really 297.77gb

yup. a 120 will most likely come out to around 110 or so, maybe less.

There is an easy way to do this. You must download a copy of Gparted boot cd which is a partitioning tool. You can then boot your computer up from Gparted and select the "empty space" on it chose the option of merging this space with your current partition. You will lose none of your data if your machine doesn't turn off during the process.

Why not add an external HD if Yours is about full, it's a good idea to leave about 10% free on a HD, for Vm: Virtual Memory

I usually use the Diskmngt to do this, or you can use "Disk Part Cmds." to modify partitions. For the Noobie I recommend Disk Director by Acronis. you can shrink, expand, delete, de activate, activate, name what ever you need to do - utilize the entire HDD. I use in my business and have NEVER lost data, or info for others... unless that is also what you want to do.
