Why does my optical drive make a loud noise when reading/copying?

When new, and for many years, my ODD (Optical Disc Drive) has worked fine and emitted a sort of pleasant, soft whirring noise when reading or copying an inserted disc. Now it still functions well, but emits a much louder vibration-like hum and I can feel some degree of excessive vibration in the casing next to the trackpad during the noise. It accepts and ejects discs normally. Is there a way to reduce this abnormal vibration/hum, perhaps by examining the ODD and tightening connectors, or is this just a sign of a dying ODD?

Many thanks,

Dick Johnson
