iMac won't recognize OS/bad drive?

I have an emc 2124 I got from a friend.

there is no OS on the HD.

I'm trying to start it up with an OSX 10.2 CD which I know is good.

When starting up with "c" pressed I only get a flashing folder with a question mark.

Starting with a OSX 10.4 upgrade disk (from 10.3) is same result.

Tried a thumb drive with 10.4 installer files copied onto it - same result.

Starting with "option" pressed is white screen with only the cursor arrow.

I should think I'd at least get a dialog box saying that the OS can't be installed on this computer if that was the issue.

all the diagnostic LEDs come on.

The cd drive spins - how how can I be sure it actually works or not? can I remove it and test it on my PC? Are there any other possible issues that I'm missing? (It's been many years since I worked on a mac)

Thanks

Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.4.7 (8K1106) Maximum MacOS: X 10.7.5*

First, you must have 10.4.7 or higher system to install.

Next, you must have a system installed to use an upgrade disk.

I don't think you have an installable system.

Best would be to buy a retail version of 10.6 from Apple for $20 bucks. You can get it here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z...

Thanks for your reply mayer. I should have been more clear. I went in knowing the disks wouldn't install. I was more concerned at that point in getting a reaction out of the mac that would indicate that it functioned to some degree. For instance, my old (read older) G4 was nice enough to explain that the disks wouldn't work in it. In the iMac I got nothing - is that how the new (read not terribly old) Macs work now?

I did order a new disk btw, so I will find out if it works.
