Device is very slow - What could be the problem?

Good Evening,

My MBP 13" late 2011 tends to be very slow. Most of the time it works with an acceptable speed, I would never say that it's fast, but the speed is okay.

However, regularly the MBP shows the loading symbol and refuses to work for 1-2 Min. When it finishes processing, it continues working as before.

At first, I thought that the HDD would be the problem, since there were only 1-2 GB on it left. So I did a factory restore and now there are 312 GB left. Anyway, my MBP is nearly as slow as it was before, so I don't know what to do.

Should I upgrade the HDD to a SDD, upgrade the ram or the cpu (if that's possible??)

I suspect your hard drive is starting to go. A slow system tends to be a system waiting for a process to complete (reading/writing to disk).

If you want to try to salvage your disk you'll need to boot up under an external drive and run both permission and disk repair within Disk Utility. You'll likely need to run it a few times to clean out all of the errors.

If this doesn't help you'll need to scratch the partition and run the ones & zeros test so the bad blocks can be isolated out. Then re-install the OS and your backup. In the end you do want to leave at least 1/3 of the disk free so the OS can use it. When you get as tight as you got with only a few GB free you do hit the limit of the OS ability to run.

Or, if you want to get a better drive I would recommend going with a SSHD hybrid drive Vs a standard HD or even a SSD.

SSD's are on the small side for what most people need as a single drive solution. Given the fact you already had a full disk (500 GB) I think you'll find you won't have the needed space with a 512 GB unit. Going to a larger SSD will be a big pinch on your wallet, which is why a SSHD is the better option here! It give you the zip of a SSD but give you the deep storage of a HD and you won't drain your wallet either! As to upgrading your memory it can improve things! Depending on what you are doing going to 8 GB may make sense for you.

Lastly, upgrading the CPU is just not possible as its soldered to the logic board.

another thing to check other than the hard drive is to see how much RAM your computer uses. Low RAM count will always slow the computer down. One way to help with this issue is to increase your page file or similar file which takes a portion of your hard drive and uses it for memory to increase performance on your machine. I know that I run accross many machines where the computer was running slow and upon looking at what was going on i would see that they would have many programs running the the background at start up. they would have the web browser, skype, anti-virus, a game, etc. All running at the same time and this would slow down the speed and performance of the entire system. So to sum it up check your task manager and see if your system has enough memory. IT should tell you how much memory is being used by your programs. if you are using 70% or more then that will slow down your system. first option like i said is to increase the page file and/or installing bigger RAM.
