Upgraded to Yosemite my disk utility NOT working can't do anything

My macbook is going thru a lot right after the upgrade.

In disk utility the top hard drives now it's titled "Untitled 1" shows capacity 59.81 GB available 86kb, used 59.81 GB and it's only showing the first aid and partition tab.

2nd hd titled Untitled1 capacity 59.45 GB available 41.45 used 18.01 GB first aid, erase, restore tabs only.

With that I'm not able to restore! I shut down and turned back on pressing option key and I only see untitled 1 hard drive that's it.

i tried to use my backup items and it will not allow me.

This is assuming you want to erase the drive and do a fresh install:

Restart your computer while holding cmnd+R. This will boot your computer into the recovery partition. Here is where you will be able to use Disk Utility and erase the drive. Because you are booted to a partition of the drive, you will not be able to wipe out all partitions.

On the drive hierarchy, "erase" the main partition in Disk Utility. Then you will be able to reinstall the operating system over it.

Hope this has helped!

Normally the first partition is the recovery partition which the newer OS's create if you don't already have one. For some reason it appears you have altered its size (59.81 GB) given the numbers you have supplied. See if you can take a snapshot of the Disk Utility drive overview so we can be sure here. post the image here for us to see.

If that is correct you'll need to scratch the drive and start over doing a fresh install. Delete all of the partitions and start again.

As to recovery from your backup. If you didn't have much space left on your SSD you may have encountered a sizing problem were your files need more space that what you now have on your SSD after the upgrade (between the recovery partition being created and the larger size of Yosemite its self).

Using Disk Utility which you will find in the Utility folder.

OK, I see them in your original post. You appear to have an encrypted volume "Encrypted Logical Partition" which you will need to delete to establish a fresh volume. Then you can create a new partition. Highlight the lower Untiled 1 then click the Erase tab.

Dan, I tried to delete Untitled 1 and no luck, it will not delete. :(

At this point I think you'll need to replace the drive
