Display not working after replacement

I replaced the cracked display on my MacBook Pro with a new one, however now the display won't come on. The computer comes on and chimes and appears to be running but the display is off. The light in back is off. Looks like no power. I thought I was super careful when unplugging and plugging into the dock. Is the display faulty? Did I damage the dock? Something else? How do I find out?

While Louis's answer is good let get to basics. Have you hooked it up to an external monitor to see if it is generating a video signal? What was the source of your replacement part?

External display works, however I noticed when I hooked it up to the external display that the computer doesn't complete the startup process. It just hangs at the apple window. Replacement part was from Command Mac Parts via e-bay. Since my original display now doesn't work either I suspect that the part is probably fine.

EDIT: The computer did eventually start up after about 5 minutes. Seems to be working ok via the external display.

This is a good line of thinking, I almost forgot this is an 820-2915 board, and your GPU should be dead right about now since all of these are now 3 years old. if you get an image on the screen, don't bother with this, but if you don't, measure on pins 2 or 3 of the LVDS connector for 3.3v. No 3.3v there means we must troubleshoot something else entirely as the mux/GPU are not telling U9000 to turn the screen on!

There is an image on the external display. It seems to run ok via the external display although it does run pretty slowly with lots of spinning beach balls.

Take the bottom cover off the computer, and read me the 820 number of your board. Most likely you blew a backlight fuse by not unplugging the battery. Have a multimeter handy so we can measure the fuse. I'll tell you where it is when I have the 820 number, it is on a different space for each board.

820-2915-A. I unplugged the battery before I started.

orient the laptop so the battery is on top and the display connector is on the bottom. The left fan plugs into the board near either agreen or a brown fuse with a P or an N written on it. See it? Measure it for continuity. Also have no battery or charger plugged in for this, unplug all power.

Louis Rossmann, added image to your answer. Hope it's ok.

That is a perfect image! I wanted to add but am falling asleep here. Thank you.

Fuse is good. Also, I re-installed the old display which was cracked but still worked. Now it doesn't light up either. I assume the problem is with the logic board. Now what? New logic board?

The prospect of logic board repairs seemed a little above my skill level so I took it to the Apple Store for a diagnosis. Of course they wanted to replace the logic board, but the total cost including labor was $310 so I decided to go with it. I didn't think I could do better even If I found the problem. So hopefully I will have a working display again in a week or so. Thanks for trying to help.
