After each of the past couple of updates, I lose internet capabilities. It shows that I am "connected" to the wifi router (and I am literally right next to it) but it won't give me an internet connection! I end up having to do a system restore to get things back. What do I need to check to see what the problem is and how do I keep this from happening??

You should go ask Microsoft for this matter .When the update runs it might have detected a newer version of your wifi and installed that on computer.
Do a Factory Reset to fix it then turn automatic update OFF. If you really really need to keep your PC up to the latest update (I really dont understand what help can those updates give you) then leave it on, but every time it update go and have a look at the update files uncheck everything related to WIFI, MODEM, LAN, INTERNET.
