My MacBook crashed and now it wont boot up!

Hi guys,

I am hoping you can help solve my problem, I decided to dual boot my old macbook A1342 with windows 7 using bootcamp. However this has been running fine for a couple of days, but then all of a sudden today I was running a few minor updates and I needed to put my magsafe charger in as my mac was about to cut out of charge and it crashed! The screen froze nothing was active, I left the macbook for a couple of minutes but still nothing... So I held the power button in for 10 seconds to force my machine to turn off so I could restart it and now it looks as if its about to boot up due to the white light on the side but the screen stays black.

I then decided to read more about faults and how to fix them so I decided to try and jump the logic board by disconecting the keyboard and trackpad, this did not work... Infact it seems as if my macbook is stuck in some sort of boot loop as The fan will be active when it turns on then the machine cuts out and turns itself back on again? I also disconected the battery with no charger attached to try and fix the theory of a loop in the boot but nothing!!

Hopefully you will have some advice that couldnt go a miss, thanks for reading :)

You talk about a dual boot what do you mean here? Do you have a second drive in your system?

さんによる

Nope just the one hard drive partitioned

Technically you are running a VM with Windows via BootCamp.

さんによる

Could you explain what "VM" means? I'm not very technical and I dont understand?

さんによる

VM - Virtual Machine. Here's a good writeup: Dual Boot or Run Windows in a Virtual Machine?. What confuses people here when you dual boot all you're doing is running via the BootCamp services in dedicated mode (can't switch between the two OS's on the fly). The install is still a full BootCamp install and the active partition & boot loader is Apples, not Microsofts.

What happens when you boot up using the recovery CD/DVD that came with your system? Are you able to. If you don't have the CD/DVD try setting up a USB boot disk using a friends Mac (make sure its the same OS-X you have). Then try it to boot up your system.

Well I do not have a recovery CD/DVD, however I tried to run my windows installation out of curiosity just to see if anything at all would show on the screen but its still just black and not responding, also I dont really have any friends with macs they all tend to use PC's. My OS-X is yosemite if that helps? P.S I'm starting to believe could be a hardware fault but I just do not know how by putting my mac on charge could lead to this. Thanks for your reply

Thats to be expected as the Windows installer does not have the needed drivers for the MacBook hardware. Also MS Windows uses a different drive format so if you don't use BootCamp to host Windows the OS-X boot loader won't boot the Mac OS-X. Basically your toast ;-{

You'll need to did the recovery disk or create from a friends system a bootable USB/FireWire external drive which you can try to fix your internal drive. You may need to reformat it and reinstall OS-X to get things fixed here. Make sure you backup your system if you can before you scratch the disk.

Ah this doesnt sound good then :/, So you belive it may be the hard drive that could be corrupt? I would also like to point out that the keyboard does not seem to be active when the machine turns on, for example the caps lock key does not light up or anything! Is there a way of creating a recovery disk online via a downloaded copy?
