"The camera will no longer take photos."

I am unsure of the current problem, but when I try to take a photo with the camera it almost doesn't respond, Im not sure if there is something wrong witht eh button to snap the picture but, when I click it on the display screen - on the topside of the camera right by the button - on the lower right hand side in brackets I see "[r 08]. When I just look at it without pressing the button the "[ 8] is there but not the "r 0." And finally, when I click to button, on the top right hand side I see "F - -" flashing.
