Can I install a Transcend Jetdrive 725 SSD?

I've seen this SSD could be installed in MBpro's.

I think it could also be installed in the IMac.

I would strongly recommend you speak with Transcend to see what they have to say. Most likely they will tell you they won't support it and they have not tested it to see if it even works.

Apple has altered their custom SSD units a few times so its not known if the older unit works here. Its not just the hardware it's the firmware within the SSD that has changed as well! So two exact same units one will work the other not!

In any case this is a very big job to swap out or install the SSD unit. Have you reviewed the IFIXIT teardown or the steps needed to even get to the SSD unit? Here's a link to the IFIXIT Teardown iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Teardown and here is the IFIXIT guide iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display SSD Replacement. Note the warning Potentially Dangerous without the correct tools you can shatter the display and/or damage it so it will no longer work! That would make your effort very expensive!

A bit late, but hopefully it will help someone "passing by"... None of the JetDrives will work in this model of iMac. The JetDrives are all SATA-based devices, with the 72x series following Apple's own 2012 and Early 2013 MacBook Pros. Starting in Late 2013, Apple moved to a PCIe-based SSD, with a different connector, which is also different electrically. The Retina iMac will require one of these PCIe SSDs, which the JetDrives are not. You can find compatible SSD blades on eBay; the Samsung-built models are referred to commonly as SSUAX and SSUBX.

The JetDrives *should* work on the earlier 2012 iMacs, but not the 2013 or later. I believe the JetDrive 725 models should fit the 2012 iMac 27", as the rMBP 15" Mid 2012 and Early 2013 OEM SATA blades are compatible w/ the iMac Late 2012.
