computer only boots up when HD is external.

received a defective imac from relative. I temporarily fixed the PSU issue and it fired right up but it had another issue that I thought was a heating issue so I took the HD out and connected it externally via USB, now it works perfectly fine. anyone know why it wont work when it is internal ???

thanks, gerry

Check the specks on the HD - it may be too new to work as an on board HD, or, damage to the connector or the cable - internal HD.

Check SATA speed of drive, look for damage, try a different cable.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

thanks for the reply machead3. I guess I should have given a history of this imac. the HD is the original from the imac and it worked before the PSU decided to kick the bucket. I have already tried a different cable, could it be my temporary PSU fix (I am using a ATX) or the dc/dc board that is causing the problem ??

I can't say - what I would do would be buy an external case for the HD to verify it's getting proper power and data cable connection (try to boot from it externally, or "see" it on a different Mac). If the external case also failed to power/mount the HD I'd figure the HD was toasted when the PSU blew.. Worst case scenario - if the internal connector is shot you use the external enclosure and boot from it.

when I said I connected the HD externally via a USB, I meant it is in a enclosure that is connected externally via a USB cable in the back of the computer port and it works perfectly but the same drive will not work when installed inside the computer. I am assuming that if it is booting up and working ok externally than it should also work when it is mounted inside, do you not agree.

so what is causing to not work when it is inside ??. I know I could just leave it like that but that is not very professional looking.

The connector is damaged, is not connected to the board at the other end, the Power Supply to the Drive may not be working.

had the same problem, as many others have.

Check out your sata cable, does it look damaged?

hi nelson, to be honest I cant remember checking it but I did replace it with another cable to be sure and it still did not make a difference. i am pretty sure the HD get its power from the dc/dc diverter board, maybe something on the board blew at the same time the PSU blew, I know i looked on both surfaces of that board and could not see anything obvious. i am also guessing that connecting the HD externally, it is bypassing that dc/dc board all together and maybe that's why it works perfectly when connected externally. does that make sense to you guys.

one more thing nelson, you mentioned that a lot of other members had the same problem, how can i search for those treads so i can read their stories
