A laptop can lose its ability to hold a charge due to battery deterioration. To fix this, try turning off the computer and remove its battery and AC adapter, and re-install them after 10 seconds. Hold down the power button of your laptop for 30 seconds to see if it reboots and holds a charge without the AC adapter plugged in. Sometimes, it may be a battery issue, such as dust accumulation or battery deterioration, so try to remove the battery, remove the dust with a microcloth and re-install the battery, or completely replace it. In addition, check to see if your AC adapter is the correct one for your laptop- it may be made by a different company or contains different wattage that your laptop requires. If the battery and AC adapter does not seem to cause the problem, you may have to re-install the driver. For Dell users, this option can be found in the device manager tab > battery settings > Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery > Right-click Uninstall driver > Accept changes and install the driver again

Hope that helps!

I had same problem for years with Inspiron 1501 and 2 years ago bought a new battery. This did not fix the problem and I left the new battery in and put the old battery in the attic. Today I found the old battery, re-inserted it and the problem is solved.

As other people have mentioned, it could be because of a problem with the battery. If it was me, this would be the first thing I check and diagnose. The battery may have lost its ability to old it's charge, or to charge at all.

I am having this same problem with my Inspiron 5558. It is not the adapter or the battery (still holds a good charge when I CAN make it work)

If I repeatedly unplug the adapter from the laptop and plug it back in, it eventually will charge normally. At first, this would take a couple of tries, maybe up to 5 or 6. Now, it takes many, many attempts, over a hundred on one occasion.

I have reloaded BIOS and driver. It is definitely a software issue, because when it is in "plugged in, not charging" state, it also runs slow and stuttering. Video is jumpy and audio crackles, even when playing a file directly from the hard drive.

Is this firmware of some kind? I have seen a lot of mentions of this kind of problem online, so it has to be something standard with the Dell package. Dell support suggested I buy an $82 battery from them. Baloney.

If you can boot your computer and you have power issues, the best step is to run the internal Dell diagnostics. To get into diagnostics, hit F12 when the Dell splash screens shows, look for the option for diagnostics tests. Generally, it will test everything or you can select which parts to test. For power issues, you want to see that the ac adapter shows up correctly (if it shows up as 1 watt then it is either a bad ac adapter or a bad mother board) and you will want to see if the battery tests as healthy.

If your laptop is still under warranty, you can call Dell tech support and they can help you diagnose the problem and set up repair.

Well, I just read all these comments because I have the same issue, and reading them got me thinking. It randomly charges to full 100% and then can be unplugged for at least a day. So it's not the battery. But it is getting less and less, the more I fiddle with the plug, it will work sometime. So I cut maybe a 1/16 of an inch off of tip of the rubber plug, with a razor, just cut it against the metal plug, rolled it inbetween my fingers. Basically to plug it in a little deeper, and low and behold, it's now charging on the first try.
