Why does my iPhone not restart after reassembly?

After replacing both the battery and the Display Assembly in my iPhone 3GS, it is recognized by itunes but will not hold charge and only displays start up apple on the screen. It also get rather warm while connected for charging.

I haven't had to work on an iPhone yet but it sounds like the battery is faulty which would explain why it overheats when charging and wont hold charge.
