Manually turn screen on or off

My screen got a crack and now, when it automatically turns the screen off when inactive after a few seconds, it lights up again, waiting for me to insert my password. It is very irritating and wastes a lot of battery power. Is there a way that i can change it so that, when i press the lock key at the right outer side of the phone to lock it and turn off the screen, that i must press the same button again for it to light up and try to open?
