Laptop makes bootup sound but doesn't show anything on the display. We have plugged a monitor into the display port as well and don't get anything on the external display either. Bad LCD or motherboard?

Do you have a second mac and a means of connection between the two systems. What I would do here is put your system into target mode and see if you can access your systems HD. If you can you can at least copy off anything important. Review this Apple TN: How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
As to figuring out what to replace here there are a few fuse links that could be burnt that can effect both outputs.
Did your system get wet or dropped? Something must have happened to cause the fuses to go. Without figuring-out the root issue any repair may not hold.

There on the logic board. But before you start replacing them are you able to access the HD via target mode? And can you tell us what happened that might help in figuring out what caused the fuses to burn.
We can access the HDD via target mode. As far as if the laptop got wet that would be a no.
Your GPU is bad (which is why both display options failed). At this point you'll need to replace the logic board.
