What causes Field Loss fault on series DC drives?

What causes the Field Loss fault on the EMERSON / CONTROL TECHNIQUES Mentor / Quantum series DC drives?

If the drive is powered with NOTHING else connected (i.e., motor), will this cause a Field Loss fault?

Hi there,

Most DC and AC Drives will not fully energize with no motor attached. Motors are verified at boot-up and constantly during operations for current levels, phasing if multi and the field you talk of, can be lost due to opens inside the motor.

Some field windings are wired directly from a power source or board, some are hidden connections inside the motor that keep a field winding energized while there is voltage at the motor inputs.

Treadmill control boards are an example of a dc drive that will hold itself off if no or a shorted motor exists at the connections.
