Is there a replacement for the SSD drive enclosure only?

I spilled soda on my MacBook 13" air. I would like to retrieve the data on the SSD if possible but I need an enclosure

The SSD is socketed, not soldered - as this guide demonstrates.

The socket format is M.2 PCIe, as explained in an earlier answer. The normal source for Mac-friendly SSD enclosures and upgrade drives is OtherWorld Computing, which has released neither enclosures nor replacement drives for 2013-2014 Macbook Air SSDs. A generic socket-compatible M.2 PCIe-to USB 3 enclosure might work, but the firmware on the internal SSD may not allow it to communicate through any interface other than the Apple logic board. Still, the enclosures are pretty cheap, so it might be worth an experiment if you've already decided to open the machine.

Apple Stores now do liquid damage repair, but they normally won't do anything to retrieve your data. If they think they need to remove or reformat the original drive to complete the repair, they won't do try a backup first, and they won't give the original drive back. If you don't have a recent backup, there are data salvage operations like DriveSavers that can retrieve data from damaged SSDs, and then you can go through the Apple repair process.

The big lesson to take away from this is to always keep regular backups. An external USB 3 hard drive + Time Machine is easy and inexpensive.

If you try the generic enclosure trick, please post a followup to your original question. It would be valuable for us to know what happens - successful or not.

Thanks for educating me that the drive is not soldered to the board (I'll correct that) but without a source for external cases and drives the answer is " only if you can find a non-damaged OEM replacement drive on e-bay or at a pawn shop"

Thanks for the info. I will try the suggestions that you made and let you all know if any of them worked.

As of spring 2015, there is now an enclosure for Apple flash SSDs from June 2013 and later. OWC has released an updated USB 3 enclosure, the Envoy Pro. They claim the enclosure works with all Apple OEM flash storage modules from mid-2013 on, including those in the SSD iMacs (including the Retina), 2013-14 Macbook Airs and Retina Macbook Pros, the coffee can Mac Pro, and the Late 2014 Mac mini. Tiny victories...

NO The drives are no longer plug and play.

Apple uses a proprietary connector AFAIK there is no 3rd party source for external case or for these blade drives.

If you could locate a working bottom case with a Thunderbolt port on e-bay (you do not need a working display) you could Target boot from that (using it similar to an external case). You can not Target boot machines without either a Firewire or a Thunderbolt Port-(that's all but the most recent MBA's).

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.
