Grey/gray screen; won't boot, even soft reboot - any help please...

I've run disk repair (in target mode from another MBPro) and even fsck but still can't boot up - I get a kernel panic if I try a soft reboot.

There are no software solutions to hardware issues.

Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem is (what OS you're using -there's a lot of those, a full compete description, the text or screen shot of any error messages) the more assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it..

If you have damaged hardware you can not bypass the kernel panic.

Try booting from a Repair or Diagnostic disk/volume (R or D boot in some versions of OS X - separate optical disks on others)

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Hi machead3 - how can you tell right away that it's a hardware issue? I bought this machine just about 2 months ago on eBay so I'm not certain of its exact age. It's 269GB and it's running 10.9.4. It was all fine until a few days ago when it slowed up whilst browsing and, for instance, couldn't automatically join my home wifi network. I therefore restarted but it wouldn't boot back up - stuck on the grey screen. I accessed it in T mode from my wife's MBPro (running 10.7.5) and dragged some bits and pieces and my iPhoto library across to that m/c as it's mostly my recent photos and movies that I really don't want to lose... I then ran disk utilities to repair the disk and permissions, then I tried a safe reboot but got kernel panic code over the grey screen. I then followed machead3's good advice on another thread on running a fsck, and after one 'disk modified' message it then was called clear of any probs. But it's still not working... more to come...

and I was unable to open the iPhoto library on my wife's mac - but could that be because her m/c hasn't been updated beyond Lion..? The iPhoto library icon appears with a graphic of a circle with a diag line across it and a diag box indicates it's corrupted... My last TimeMacine backup dates back about 7 weeks and doesn't include those recent photos and movies. I'll appreciate any help so thanks already...

My rule of thumb for hardware kernel panics is you can't do a safe boot. It' could be something else... Depends on if you just installed a new device or software. If you did that and then BAM panics, a safe boot should eliminate accessing those files... (safe boot Is a bare essential boot OS). If none of that scenario is true I tend to think it's hardware related. I think you are correct that your iPhoto library has been updated and the older version can not read it... If you did indeed transfer the entire library and not the app. You also need to switch libraries from within iPhoto to use that library.
