Fan goes to maxspeed at startup, computer is laggy

The fan goes to maxspeed sometimes even at startup, so I doubt that its because of heat.

Apart from it being annoyingly noisy it also lags quite significantly.

I chose the setup with the strongest CPU etc and I used to play games at max setings without any problems. I have bootcamp installed, but I have the same lag/fan problems in both modes(win7/OSX), so that cant be the source of the problem.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to test it for hardware-malfunction?

Please give us the last four figures of your serial number. Also, has the hard drive been changed?

First lets see what the builtin sensors are telling us. Download this app: Temperature Gauge Pro so you can see whats going on. snap a screenshot and post it here for us to see.

You should create a bootable thumb drive (OS-X) so you can check your HD using Disk Utility. Give that a try to see what it tells you.

Often I end up cleaning the dust buildup internally and if needed (on older systems) reapply a fresh coat of thermal paste on the CPU & GPU's. But before you go down that path see what the tools tell us.

Hi and thank you for your reply.

The same day you wrote I had claped my iPad gentle on the back-side. I guess I got the idea that it could be a dust problem, so that if I padded it a bit all over the dust might rearrange itself.

That strategy seems to work temporarily. (it also kinda points in the direction of dust-buildup). It just gave me a week without the fan speeding up and all that - which also were the reason I did not respond before now. I needed the problem to be present in order to test it.

And now its back.

The app tells me that temperatures seem fine (in the range between 35-46 degrees).

The ODD fan is at its lowest 1400 RPM

The HDD fan aswell at 1100 RPM

But CPU fan is at max speed 4000 RPM

Do you need more info?

Thanks alot!!

Did you create a bootable thumb drive so you can check your HD? I would start there. While it may appear to be a CPU kind of problem a HD that is in trouble will also cause the CPU to get hotter.

Hi Dan.

I made a bootable SD-card-thumbdrive with Maverick. Toke some time to google what it was and how to create it, but now im ready.

How do we proceed from here?

さんによる

Good, now go into you system preferences with the USB drive connected and set it as the startup disk. Once your system boots up (it will take longer so don't panic). Go into the USB drives application > utility's folder to locate disk utility run it checking your internal HD. How is the system running? Also did disk utility find any errors on the disk?

Hi Dan. The HD checked out fine. I checked the whole disk and that went fast. Then I checked Mac Partition - it toke longer and checked out fine. For my Bootcamp partition, I couldn't press the check-button. But I assume that is ok too, since the whole disk checked out fine. I know.. what logic! :-)

So whats next?

Some guy in here asks for the last 4 digits of the serial#. What can he make of those?
