Replaced HDD and Battery - Still getting a Red X

Ok, so I have an IPOD Classic 80 GB (S/N: 8L809X6VYMV). I ordered a new Battery (From IFIXIT) and a new HDD from Ebay (Toshiba P/N: MK1634GAL).

When I turn it on, I get the dreaded Red X. I've done the hard reset trick 10 times in a row but it always returns to the red x screen immediately after displaying the apple logo. However, If I replace the new HDD with the original 80 GB drive (Toshiba P/N: MK8022GAA) it works with no problem. Therefore I know the circuit board is OK and the battery is also OK. My question is, do I need to get a USB adapter for the drive and format/partition the drive before the IPOD will recognize it?

Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to buy this adapter only to learn that it was a waste of time and money.

knharris, you should not have to format it. Once it is installed iTunes should recognize it as a iPod that requires restore . I would still get a USB-to-Zif adapter to check the new hard drive. If you can access it as a separate drive you can try and format it. Otherwise exchange the hard drive.

Ok well I got a USB to ZIF adapter and was able to successfully format the drive and copy data to and from it. If i slap it back in my Ipod i still get the red x of death- and I cannot enter disk mode. If I run the HDD SPEC diagnostic i get "Can't Open Device". After all of this, however, if I swap in my old 80 gb drive it fires right up and gives me the option to restore my ipod. What on earth am I doing wrong with this new drive?
