Repair information for the iMac G4.

Died while asleep after power went out

My Imac G4 was put into sleep mode on Sunday evening. Monday morning our power went off and on twice suddenly. Now the Imac will NOT power up. I took it to the Apple store in SLO. They say that repairs would be very very expensive. I have data on my Imac that is very important to me, and I run an application off the Classic environment for my business. A clone of the hard drive was placed on an external drive for me by the Apple store. If I buy a G4 or G5, can I run the classic environment? Can I do this by loading 10.4 instead of the 10.5 on the machines I am looking at? I don't want to buy a new machine only to find out I cannot run my classic program. Help!

Here's the list from everymac.com of the last Macs that can run Classic: http://www.everymac.com/articles/q&a/mac...

Some Powermac G5s and iMac G5s are indeed on the list. And yes, everymac.com says that Classic requires OS 10.4.11 or earlier -- it can't run on these computers in 10.5 or later.

it is hard to quantify 'expensive' - when your business relies on it. If not having your computer and data put's you out of business you may have to have it repaired - but if buying a similar machine and putting your data on it gets you over the line, that's fine too.

Maybe you should let a good professional handle this - I have seen to often that business owner panic at a computer breakdown, because they see their business being threatened - and it is hard to stay calm and objective when troubleshooting if your financial existence is at stake

Basically any mac with PPC support can run classic.
