What MODEL SSD can be used?

I love the thoroughness of the EMC 2639 SSD replacement guide...all except for the last photos. They show the SSD being removed...upside down. It's clear it's a Samsung, but there's no listing that I could find of what model SSD is used, and there's no photo of the other side of the SSD. I really don't want to try to buy something off eBay only to find it's just slightly incompatible. Does this need an exact replacement? What drives are compatible?

Sadly, Apple is the only source for replacement SSD's presently.

Apple uses a custom SSD interface so you can't just slap in anything. You will find exact same units for sale but they won't work as the firmware within the SSD needs to be Apples.

Apple also made getting to the SSD extremely hard in this system. Between the glued on screen and needing to pull the logic board it's not a system many people will be upgrading.

Some 3rd parties have come out with replacements for the laptop systems so far the SSD's for the iMac's are still a no show.

I feel your pain here, we ended up buying Mac Pro systems to replace our worn out iMac's. Which hit us hard in our IT budget.

Thanks for the reply! I can't say I'm happy with the answer, but that isn't your fault.

Just to clarify, when you say "Apple is the only source for replacement SSD's presently," does that mean an Apple store can/will install the necessary Apple-branded SSD into my iMac? Or is an after-sale upgrade of this sort not something they do?

Apple Store's don't do after-sale upgrades, so thats out. As to the access to the part Apple is the only source due to the programing of the SSD. If your SSD was defective they would replace it with the same sized unit as a repair. So far no 3rd party has stepped up to the plate offing upgrades on the 'Thin Series' of iMacs.

Cslbox - What is your point here? The IFIXIT tear downs and guides offer this info. And we know the connection is the new M.2 spec for the SSD blade. The rub here is the way the SSD talks to the system (the I/O). The dialog between the SSD is programmed within the SSD controller (firmware). Sadly The M.2 spec did not define this clearly. As it turns out Apple has a few different versions which are not compatible across the different series of systems. So this makes it hard to move what looks like the SAME SSD to different systems! Lastly, this firmware needs to be gotten from Apple so far one one has the iMac versions.

You do need to be careful here as Apple has custom firmware on the SSD unit. So while this may look like the same SSD unit it may not work. Which is why none of the 3rd party companies have offered a replacement unit yet. If you found a iMac system which was broken down for its parts and bought the SSD from that system then you have an out here. Buying anything off eBay you need to be very careful.
