phone emitted sparks while on charger

I am fairly new to iPhone repair my experience is limited to battery replacement and and back covers. The other day my phone had about an 80percent charge and I plugged it into an outlet. Shortly after it started emitting sparks and all the lights in the room dimmed. I unplugged it and opened it up. the battery appeared normal. I tried to replace the battery but as soon as I connected the new battery the phone began to get hot in the sims card area. What should I try next?

luevano13207, consider changing the dock connector. If it was an over voltage issue it would most likely destroy your charging circuit before reaching the battery. The overheating could be caused by a failed/damaged charging coil. Use these guides to work on your phone. Check for any physical damage, or if you have the knowledge and tools, check for function. You want to start by checking 3 inductors. For that, of course, you need a multimeter, or at least an ohm meter, to check for continuity. I hate to refer to those as fuses, but they most certainly control part of the charging circuit. First one is reference designator L3, it is a FERR-120-OHM-1.5A inductor. L4, right below it , has the identical value. Next would be the charger inductor L28 2.2UH-1.8A-155MOHM. All of these are pretty much available at mouser. com or digikey.com. Check the Diode D604, located just above L28. Purchasing replacement boards that are locked or water damaged are nothing but buying someones problems and would not be a good choice at all. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for your insight. It's well above me at this time but it's something to work up to. I removed the mother board when I cleaned it. I never took the covers off the components. I assume they just pop off. The guides on this site are most helpful and very easy to follow, however there are no guides on disassembling the motherboard itself. I think that would be most interesting to see. I do have a multimeter but I never have used it on parts so small, I can hardly even see them. The thought of soldering these components seems unreal to me at this time. Can you suggest any books or kits to learn how to micro solder.

luevano, take a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7Tu8NXu... and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uiroWBk... as well as here http://www.instructables.com/id/Intro-in...

Remember that most of this soldering is done with a microscope and a hot sir soldering station or a very very fine soldering tip. It will take lots and lots of practice to get good at it.

from your description i see no easy way to fix the device as somehow enough energy was sapped into the phone from your house to dim the lights, its honestly hard to believe that much power could have gone into such a small device, but something defiantly shorted out inside

I am not sure what caused it. Maybe using an after market charger. I have since completely disassembled phone. I cleaned and inspected the parts. I didn't find anything that looked burnt or discolored. I reassembled phone and when I connected the battery the phone started to get hot again. I am thinking that there is a short somewhere. I am guessing in the logic board. I am starting to look for replacements. Does the board have to be from exact same phone? Will boards from other carriers or data storage capacity interchange. I am assuming that a phone sold as icloud locked won't work. What about water damaged phone? What am I looking for in a parts phone? I probably can't just buy a logic board Rigt?

Most likely this was caused by a non-genuine Apple accessory, e.g. the cable or wall adapter. I have never seen sparks come from the outside of the phone, only time it has happened to me is inside of the iphone touch contacts near the battery. When it starts to get hot that is usually a sign of a short caused by water damage or a severe fall.

Thanks for your input. The phone did fall off a table maybe a month ago. It appeared to work fine up until this charging incident but it was significant enough of a fall to cause a small crack on the back cover.
