Upgrade Hard drive on Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 2 13 (not pro)?

I'm interested in buy a Lenovo Yoga 2.

I would like to buy the version with 500 GB SSHD + 16 GB SSD and replace it. ( can only find info about the Yoga 2 Pro that comes with an mssd ... )

I wonder if this version comes with a normal SATA and so If I will be able to replace the HDD with a SATA SSD that I already have.

I would recommend you give their support line a call to see what they can tell you. I tried reviewing their web site but it was a bit confusing as they have a few different Yoga models.

I purchased my Yoga 2 13 (non-pro) from BestBuy. It came with the 500GB SSHD + 16GB SSD. That actually means that this is a 500GB HD with a built-in 16GB solid state cache. This is a hybrid drive. It is a 5mm high drive with a new style connector, not a standard 2.5 inch drive connector. There are no consumer 5mm drives available currently. You will not be able use a 2.5 inch SSD.

However, this Y 2 13 also comes with a M.2 type 2280 SSD slot. I purchased and installed a Crucial M550 128GB M.2 card (CT128M550SSD4) from Newegg. It is $99. This card is very fast in my Yoga.

Here is the CrystalDiskMark:

1000MB Read Write

Seq ----- 479.5 - 369.9

512K ---- 439.7 - 369.4

4K ------- 27.17 - 68.44

4KQD32 - 339.3 - 265.6

So for a cost of $799 for Yoga (sale) and $99 for the SSD, I have a Yoga 2 13 with 628GB of storage and a fast Windows drive. It boots to the desktop in less than 13 seconds.

The PCMark 7 score is 4935.

BTW, you can see a full dis-assembly of the Yoga 2 13 here:

http://www.myfixguide.com/manual/lenovo-...

By the way, the Yoga 2 Pro also uses a small SSD card, smaller than my SSD card.

799! That seems like a great price at BB. Don't see if now unfortunately. When was it that price? Do you miss not having the 8 GB Ram? I'm leaning towards the same machine u bought now. Is it easy to add the new SSD and migrate OS to it and making it bootable? Any links on how to do that?

さんによる

The price is $819 today at BestBuy. I have never worked with 8GB of RAM, so I do not miss it. I do work in an office environment where I would like more memory (company PC) but I can get by with closing unneeded applications.

The only reason I see where 8GB of RAM is necessary is for certain games and for video or photo editing and super-sized spreadsheets.

さんによる

is it possible to increase ram in any way ?

さんによる

Can someone please post a step-by-step guide of this process? I'm not well informed about it and dont want to risk screwing it up.

さんによる

Even I own a yoga...Even I would like to know wether the ram is upgradable because I saw that yoga 2 (pro) model has soltered ram. I dont know wether yoga 2 (non pro) has upgradable memory. Please help

Most Yoga 2 13 (non Pro) versions have a 2,5" HDD with a special SFF connector. The replacement cable to use a standard SATA drive (HDD or SSD) is very hard to obtain.

Better you buy a SATA m.2 SSD 80mm (tested with Crucial m500 m550), as there is such a connector to put an extra type of storage device.

Then you can leave the HDD inplace and use cheap extra storage. Or remove it to minimize energy use, heat and noise production.

Do not buy a PCIe m.2 SSD, as this will not work.!

Also the white list in the Yoga BIOS might reject other m.2 SSD brands, so better stick with the cheap Crucials....

My hybrid drive 500gb 5mm 8gb nand, broke down, can I use only the Crucial m500 without the original sshd ?

Crucial MX300 1TB M.2 (2280) Internal Solid State Drive (CT1050MX300SSD4)

さんによる

Yes, you can use the m2 SSD without the original (ss)HD.

It reduces energy consumption, heat and noise...

Make sure the SSD you want to use is in the Lenovo BIOS white list...

I have just bought a UK model Yoga 2 13" with 8Gb RAM and 500Gb SSHD.

I first started up the machine and using the old style Control Panel ( Use Classic Shell if you can't find it) went to recover and made a recovery USB stick.

I then removed the base and then the 5mm SSHD and carrier. I didn't remove any of the cables folded over it as I slid it sideways then detached the SATA connector. The SATA drive was taken out of the drive metal carrier.

This is the vital thing. I bought a Sandisk 960Gb SSD. Peel the corners off the whitel label revealing 4 screws. Take the plastic lid off and then refix the SSD into the drive carrier. Replace by sliding back and screwing three of the retaining screws. Due to overhang on one corner I omitted one. Refix base. Don't screw the 11 screws until you're finished.

Reboot the Lenovo with the USB recovery media. Recover onto the SSD. If it fires up OK then refix the screws on the base. Now you've got an 8Gb Ram and 960Gb SSD setup!! I believe you can do the same or similar with Samsung Evos but I can't guarantee that.

Mine is superb now and got it for only £399 at XSOnly 1 year Lenovo warranty refurbed by them.

Any chance you made some photos you could share?

Also just so I understand it... You bought a standard 2.5" SSD and removed the cover, then you put the "naked" ssd in the drive carrier of the original SSHD?

さんによる

I'm afraid I didn't take photos and won't risk re-opening ! but yes the base cover of the Sandisk was removed and re-fit into the drive carrier where three of the four screws were reused as third was difficult and would mean cutting the carrier. The SSD components do not show or touch anything in the laptop ( the reverse of the PCB only shows, so safely installed). I think my description also works with other SSDs - they may have a different cover removal. I had a Kingston that you couldn't modify. Chris

What 528GB SSD dive is available for the Lenovo Yoga 2 pro, if any? I know how to replace it, wouldn't know what brand an model SSD to buy that the bios would recognize. Also would not know how to copy my entire existing drive as I do not have the windows 8.1 disk as it was re loaded on the machine. Any help? PS the Yoga 2 pro ram is not upgradeable. And the wireless card on the Yoga 11s is also not upgradeable, but the 2 pro wireless card is - I went from a n to an ac, too 5 min to do and works great.

Sincerely,

Tom

Thank you! Can you tell me how to copy my drive to the new drive? I don not have the original windows 8.1 cd only what was preinstalled on the Lenovo 2 pro. Thanks for all your help.

Hi again I looked at the SSD you suggested and the maintenance manual of the Lenovo Yoga 2 pro 13" and they look totally different. Any suggestions?

さんによる

The Yoga 2 Pro and Yoga 2 13 are different machines with other SSD interfaces:

: : Y2Pro has mSATA (full)

The Samsung EVO mSATA works

: : Yoga 2 13 has m.2 (full 80mm) for SSD and the SFF interface for the OEM HDD

The m.2 Crucial M500 & M550 do work (interface & BIOS white list)

is ram on yoga 2 (not pro) upgradable?

See my post below. 8Gb single Ram only but have used 960Gb Sandisk. 1Tb Evo probably also - both mean removing part of SSD

I have a Yoga 2 13 (non pro) model 20344. It came with a hybrid HD fitted. I just replaced the drive and cradle with a SSD. The adapter cable has SATA connector at the correct end. If you have a model with just a M.2 drive fitted you will need to obtain the correct adapter cable (eBay ?) All fits snugly - I reckon it's about 1mm taller than original drive.
