Possible on board RAM fault?

Just bought this machine and though it works fine the system profiler only shows 256Mb on board RAM when there should be 512Mb, and it doesn't chime on start up.

Are these two issues connected and how do I resolve the first one?

Assuming the sound on your laptop is functional you should be able to reset the volume level and thereby restore the chime sound by resetting the PRAM. But no, the two issues should not be related.

I've seen an iBook here and there show less RAM than it should actually have, so it's conceivable that a bad 1.42GHZ could be showing 256MB. It's hard to say whether that indicates bad RAM or not, but it probably does. A good test would be to add additional RAM and see if it registers correctly.

You must have the 256mb version of the iBook.
