Why super SLOW & Fan full speed after opening case 10.9.2?

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Dual Core 2 2.4GHz

In order to change a broken glass, I opened the case according to the guide here. (Thank you)

After I reassembled, I noticed the computer was running very slow and the fan was on all the time. However I can login and all my applications do work (though responsiveness is very poor).

At first I thought it had something to do with the clock and certificate verification (since I disconnected the battery), but after setting it correctly and rebooting, the problem didn't go away.

I don't think the wireless was able to connect to my hot spot at home, but that might just be another symptom.

I verified the disk using the Disk Utility from Finder, but that didn't reveal any problems. So I'm currently running the AHT and still waiting for that to finish (with extended tests). After 50 minutes it was approx 1/3 done, so I cancelled and ran the shorter test. It reported error:

4SNS/1/c0000008:TSOP--124 (Heat Sink, thermal sensor)

What can be done? (I can't believe it's failed because it was working fine before I disassembled.)

Cheers,

Nap

Doesn't sound good ;-{ Did you drop or bang your system?

Often other things can get messed up when your drop or bang your system. At this point I would run HD diags. Vs AHT and I would run a Fan & Temp monitoring app like: Temperature Gauge Pro to see a little deeper into what was overheating and how the fan looks.

My guess here is the HD took the fall/bang badly and is causing your problems.

To prove this you could try running your system on an external HD (booting it off a fresh system). Does the responsiveness come back? And does the system run cooler?

If it does I would first try backing up anything of importance from the HD and then running Disk Utility run the repair options on your drive. If it fails its time for a new HD.

If you have a SSD in there now I would focus on the SATA cable like Mayer recommends as Apple & some third parties had a bad run of them. I would also make sure the EFI firmware is upto date as well EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs. Let us know what you find worked for you.

I ordered the sata cable from you, and it arrived a rather quickly, thanks. However, after installing it, there is no change in the behaviour of my Macbook. :(

Could you please point me to a diagram that shows where all the temperature sensors are at? The problem is intermittent and I would like to find where it is Actually occurring.

Good point Mayer ;-}

It came from a friend, and I didn't want to ask what happened.

So, yes it didn't look good, and the hard disk needed replacing too.

I put a SSD in it, and the whole computer has been working fine since I've had it (4 weeks now).

I installed the original 10.6.4 and upgraded it through to 10.9.2 and installed a bunch of other tools, XCode, MacPorts, QT Creator, etc.

I had some spare time today, so I finally got around to replacing the screen, and unfortunately the above problem happened.

Also, I'm able to connect to wireless, but the App Store is taking ages to load. I"m going to check out a temp. sensor program.

Since I haven't touched the main logic board, except to disconnect a few connectors, I'm reluctant to accept that the sensor is suddenly faulty.

A bad HD/IR will destroy the hard drive in about 50% of the ones I've worked on. Do NOT replace with a used part!

さんによる

HD/IR? I don't know what you mean by that.

My Boot ROM is MBP71.0039.B0B (current is MBP71.0039.B0E) and my SMC is up to date. I updated them when I was doing the OS upgrades.

I'm looking at the App Store for temperature sensor s/w but can't decide on which one (taking too long to load the reviews).

I don't believe this has anything to do with my hard drive since the SSD is brand new, Disk Utility didn't report any errors, and the slow responsiveness is affecting the mouse pointer, not just loading speeds.

In the Activity Monitor, System has 95%, User is around 3%.

Look at the link I gave you. The part is the Hard Drive Cable w/ IR Sensor for MacBook Pro 13" Unibody - 922-9062. Do a search on this site for that part number to get an idea of how many fail. I replace at least two a week. It has destroyed the hard drive in 50% of the cases I've worked on. When ordering make sure you get the one for the 13" as the 15" cable connects differently.

The same problem happen to me on my macbook pro 15" I put some diamond cpu compound on CPU and GPU. After I reassembled turn on fans full speed, slow process. Reading forums thermal sensor cpu got damage i was worried, then someone advise check every screw, few of them were loose, . fix the problem for me. Now Temp does not go over 60c viewing 1080p video =) with 4000 rpm fan speed. Check wireless cables, on my case one was loosed.

Alberto - While redoing the thermal paste can do wonders on many systems. This system's temp numbers don't appear overly high (review Napoleon's reply Mar 30) so I don't think redoing it would help him with his current problem.
