Iphone 4s with cracked glass. Replaced the screen assembly and the phone flashes faintly when turned on but will not light. Plugged old screen back in and it lights just fine and everything works. Tried a second screen and same thing. Will not light.

One possible explanation is that a pin of the female socket connector tore and remained attached to the male LCD connector on old screen--new screens then can't work without that pin, but old screen would still (kind of) mate the pin and socket. Check with magnification the socket and connectors.

Unfortunately no. Nothing looks ou of place at all and there are no pins stuck in the old one. I am totally baffled. Never have had one do this. My next option is to try a full restore of the phone.

It turns out that the phone was at version 5.11. I updated the iOS to 7.0.4 and it recognized the new screen and worked perfectly! Problem solved.
