Want to Check Power/Volume Buttons With No LCD

Hi I am doing a screen repair on my ipod. I pulled all the stuff I need out. I know a common problem that happens when you pull the back cover off the logic board is the volume and power button cables get ripped and things stop working. Now at this point I have no LCD to see anything on the display. I was wondering if there is anything that I can do to check to see if the button are still working even though I don't have a LCD. Can I control stuff from the computer? It's hooked into the computer right now. Sill waiting on the LCD it's coming from China I want to test sooner than later.

Oh one other question. The copper shied on the back of the camera on the top right corner of the ipod. I saw a video where a guy just ripped it like it was nothing. I heard this little shield is for like wifi or something. Well I followed the dudes video and tore the !@#$ thing. I still haven't assembled my ipod due to waiting for my LCD to come in from China. Do I have to repair this thing is it necessary to have the little shield? And if I should have to repair it any ideas what with?

Hi,

You can check power on button with trying put device in DFU mode by power on + home button. But for volume up/down ... I don't now.

Regards.

Thank you, it worked. As far as volume I'm sure it's fine. I was pretty !@#$ careful, I just was antsy and wanted to test it before I got the LCD in the mail.

Following wrong repair guides are disastrous. The cables should be desoldered before further disassembly, don't attempt to make shortcut by skipping steps, it will always cost you more.

Very unfortunately I haven't find any circuit diagrams for iPod touch gen 4, there should be test points for buttons but without diagrams I can't say for sure.

As for the copper shield, it's a heat sink and grounding panel. It's okay to have a broken one

Yeah I don't take those how to videos as gospel I usually watch several of them so if someone is doing something different one video I notice. Some people just breeze over everything to make it seems easier than what it is to sell what ever replacement part they are trying to market at that time.

I was careful of wifi antenna / volume and power cables. I am just waiting for my part and had nothing better to do and wanted to test it out.

I see the question about the heat sink over camera is a common one. I noticed after a decent search on this site. I'm not too worried about it. It seems kinda moot but every part is there for a reason and I'll just do a dab a solder or something.

Thanks for the reply
